Happy New Year!/Rock Band is a wondrous invention

January 1, 2009

I sit at my computer, two hours into 2009.  My wife and I continued our boycott of New Year’s festivities this year and instead decided to go to an early movie, grab dinner, then hang out at home.  Hanging out turned into a Rock Band duo play session, or “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”, as Dick Clark might call it.

That’s not all that notable unless you know my wife, who barely tolerates my gaming habit and will generally not go near a video game.  But she loves Rock Band.  As I sit here, I hear her banging away on the drums in the next room to Nirvana’s “Drain You”, a song I can’t imagine she’s a fan of.  This is why Rock Band and games like it are so great.  We have wiled away many an hour with her on drums or singing and me  doing a variety of rock functions.   It’s a bonding experience between us over what is essentially my hobby.  It’s especially funny considering how pissed she was last year when I told her I had bought a set of plastic drums that was going int he basement!

Speaking of pissed, after I failed “Joker and the Thief” for about the 5th time, we came up with a New Year’s resolution for me – stop getting so upset at video games.  Seriously, it’s dumb, but I do it all the time.  So that’s my project for next year this year.

So here’s wishing you and yours the best in the new year, and keep reading my blog if you’re so inclined.  I’m going to try to keep a relatively consistent update schedule with a variety of content.  I appreciate any and all feedback.

Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2008

Just wanted to wish my occasional readers the best for you and your families this holiday season, whether it be Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate.  Take time to be with your family and friends and be thankful for all we are blessed with.  And play a lot of games when time allows.  I will be.

Move to Wordpress/refocusing of blog

December 9, 2008

Well, I’ve moved.  As you can see, Schlotzky’s has relocated to Wordress, from the old digitalschlotzky.blogspot.com.  There are a few reasons why, mainly having to do with the interface and options available at WordPress as compared to Blogger.  Nothing against Blogger necessarily, I just feel the features here at WordPress fit me a little more comfortably.  Plus I’m familiar with the layout, as I used to have a blog here.  I”ve moved all the posts from Blogger (less that a week worth – I’ve only just begun!) here to WordPress.  I’m still jacking around with the site design, but rest assured it will look better and be more logical/functional in short order.

With the move, I decided it would be a good time to refocus the blog to give myself a more defined direction.  Whereas before I was going to try and cover all manner of media (games, music, movies, etc.), I have decided it would be make more sense to just go ahead and make the blog strictly game-focused.  Oh, there might be a random post here and there that’s off-topic, but by and large Schlotzky’s will now officially be focused like a laser on games alone.  Specifically, I’ve been playing a lot of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning since its launch in September, as my posts below might indicate.  Consequently, the majority of the information you find here is going to be WAR-related for the time being.  I do, however, occasionally play other games.  To that end, expect to see some coverage of strategy games (I just picked up Red Alert 3 in particular) and other random console games for the times that I tear myself away from WAR.

I’m excited about being able to write for myself and for you, Dear Reader.  It’s going to be a fun ride, so strap on your helmets, and let’s get started!

Introducing: me

December 9, 2008
(Note that this post originally appeard at digitalschlotzky.blogspot.com on 12/3/08, but was moved when the blog relocated to this address.)
Good day to you. My name is Schlotzky and this is my blog. I’ve been wanting to do the blogging thing for a while now, but never gave it the effort it really needed to succeed and/or hold my interest for more than a couple weeks. I’m looking to change that with this effort.

This site is generally going to talk about things I enjoy, but with an emphasis on video games. I have a pretty wide-ranging interest in games, all the way from Peggle to MMOs, Atari to Xbox 360. Right now, I’m knee deep in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, having sworn off WoW a couple years ago. You’ll see a lot of WAR coverage here as I make my way through that game. I’m also a big consumer of Strategy titles for the PC and am currently enjoying Red Alert 3, so I’ll probably come back to that from time to time. I’ll bounce around and explore fresh topics – it may even give me an excuse to buy more games (as if I needed one).

In addition to the games talk, music, movies, food, and beer will also see some attention here. Gotta keep it spicy. Maybe even a little sports, although my teams have been sucking lately, and nobody wants to hear about that (although the Chiefs did just double their win total last weekend…) I’ll try and stay away from politics as well, but may lapse every once in a while, so forgive me. The layout looks like crap right now, I know that. It will look better eventually and be a lot more functional to boot.

I’m looking forward to having an outlet for words. I realize the blog lacks a certain visual appeal – hopefully I’ll get it nailed down in the future with some flashier graphics, etc. If anybody ever comes here, I would encourage those hypothetical people to leave many insightful nuggets of wisdom, helpful suggestions, or even flames. See you guys in the comments section!
